PHARAOH FACTOR: When British archaeologist Howard Carter found the lost tomb of boy king Tutankhamun in November 1922, it caused a sensation. But a legend grew up that it was cursed after a string of mystery deaths among those involved. Lord Carnarvon, the dig’s financial backer, died aged 56 a few months later, as did a radiologist who X-rayed the mummy, at 52. Overall some 20 untimely fatalities were linked to the discovery.

VALLEY OF DEATH: Many tombs of Egyptian pharaohs are found in the Valley of the Kings near Luxor, Egypt. In 2004, a German tourist stole a relic from the area and apparently developed a fever, paralysis and died shortly afterwards. His step-son later returned the artefact to the Egyptian embassy in Berlin, fearing it was cursed.
