Mickelson motivating Rose’s pursuit of glory

- by NEIL McLEMAN

JUSTIN ROSE has revealed he is taking inspiration from Phil Mickelson winning the US PGA aged 50.

And the plan seems to be working after Rose, 45, became the oldest ever European winner on the PGA Tour by claiming a playoff victory on Sunday at the FedEx St Jude Championship.

The win means the new world No.9 will see his “golden summer” extend, his victory confirming a seventh Ryder Cup appearance at Bethpage Black in September.

Rose first found fame as a 17-year-old qualifier at the 1998 Open when he chipped in at the last to finish tied fourth.

And the 2013 US Open winner is still producing stunning finishes as he birdied six of his last eight holes on Sunday - including the last two of a three-hole playoff - to beat US Open champion JJ Spaun.
