It was December and he’d just seen his England side narrowly lose to France in the World Cup quarterfinals in Qatar.

But when the dust settled in the days that followed and Southgate considered his future as England boss, he couldn’t shake one thought from his mind.

His Three Lions still had a golden opportunity to end the nation’s long wait for a trophy when Euro 2024 came around.

And there’s a good chance Southgate (inset) will reap the dividends come the end of the tournament in Germany next summer.
