But 'Smudger' has become a standard-bearer for the new breed of darts players who want to turn the oche into a catwalk for the "fat boy slim" brigade.

Darts used to have an image problem - potbellied players sinking pints on stage in smoky halls, a setting ruthlessly (and brilliantly) mocked in a 1980s TV comedy sketch show Not The Nine O'Clock News.

But former European champion Smith (below) is leading the charge towards fitness first because it helps him stay focused on stage.
