Fantasies of the famous

Incredibly, the idea the moon landings never happened is older than the space programme itself.

It dates back to 1956 sci-fi story Cave of Night, by James E Gunn, in which the US Air Force fakes the first crewed space flight.

Celebrity fans include Whoopi Goldberg, who once asked why a flag planted by astronauts appeared to be rippling when it had "no air" around it. In fact, it only moved when someone touched it.

French actress Marion Cotillard has also cast doubt on the historic event.

"9/11 was an inside job"

The first conspiracy theories appeared online just hours after the attacks by terror group al-Qaeda, on September 11, 2001. And since then, they've only got more wild and unlikely.

Many claim the US government planned the atrocity that killed more than 3,000 - or at least knew about it in advance and let it happen.
