Bad HAIR days

GREEK TO ME: You might think of the mullet as a 20th Century invention, but it's been around since the Ancient Greeks.

Bad HAIR days

Writing in the 8th Century BC, poet Homer described a group of spearmen called the Abantes who wore "their forelocks cropped, hair grown long at the back."

CAVING IN: Some aficionados think the mullet was invented even earlier. In his book Mullet Madness, author Alan Henderson says the hairstyle may date back to prehistoric times. He claims cavemen would have wanted to keep their fringe out of their eyes, while enjoying the warmth of the extra growth at the back.

ROMAN AROUND: Roman Emperor Tiberius, who ruled from AD14 to AD37, was another proud bearer of the mullet. Biographer Suetonius wrote that he "wore his hair rather long at the back, so much so as to even cover the nape of his neck".
