O’Brien collars his 11th Derby

- by MELISSA JONES

LAMBOURN was lucky for Wayne Lordan and punters as the colt ran them ragged in the 246th Betfred Derby at Epsom.

Named after the famous thoroughbred training centre in Berkshire, Aidan O'Brien’s stamina-laden runner attracted a swathe of support before the start with rain expected to make it a true test.

And even though the inclement weather was delayed and failed to give the circuit a pre-race soaking, Lambourn and Lordan still held all the aces, having their opponents strung out across the Surrey straight.

Boxed in stall 10, the most successful with 11 winners since 1967, O'Brien’s 13-2 chance put 43-year-old Lordan’s hands around the coveted trophy for the first time.
