YESTERDAY saw the start of the salmon season in Scotland - January 15 has rolled around and the game fishing year kicks off.

The Tay salmon fishing season opening ceremony was held at Meikleour Fishings by Kinklaven Bridge.

They were raising funds for “Salmon In the Classroom’, a project that allows dozens of kids to get to know the Tay salmon and visit the river catchment.

Scotland football manager Steve Clarke, who fished for salmon when he coached at Newcastle, performed the first symbolic cast of the season.

Claire Mercer Nairne, vice-convener of the TDSFB and owner of the Meikleour Fishings, said: “The primary focus now is ensuring that our river catchment produces as many juveniles as possible and that they reach the sea safely.

“There is no denying that 2025 was a difficult season in terms of catches and some very challenging weather pattern:
