Cup win proves false dawn as Martin's men fluff their lines again and are left sickened by ex-Celts striker
-
SO much for the Rangers revival. Anyone fooled by a potential Russell Martin renaissance at Ibrox should probably think again.
And as if these fans haven't suffered enough indignation already this season - it was a former Celtic striker who stuck the knife in this time.
Hyeon-Gyu Oh scored Genk's winner in the Europa League opener against 10-man Rangers. But before, and after, Mo Diomande's 43rd-minute red card, this was yet another insipid display from Martin's men.
After the weekend win over Hibs in the cup, the manager had quietened down vociferous protests against him. But after this Euro defeat and powder-puff performance-expect them to ramp up again on Sunday at Livingston.
Rangers struggled to create chances and were wide open in defence, even with 11 men on the pitch.
Oh missed a first-half penalty that Jack Butland saved but returned to haunt his old rivals by notching after the break, clinically finishing a Jarne Steuckers through ball.
The former Hoops striker also had a goal chalked off by VAR later for offside. By the end, home supporters were on Martin's back again chanting for him to go as Genk threatened to win by more. And just like their domestic campaign, Rangers' Euro adventure got off to the worst possible start. Here are Record Sport's five talking points:
This result will only increase and intensify the pressure on Martin ahead of the trip to West Lothian. Of course, there were mitigating circumstances here with Diomande' straight red.
