Dortmund left for duds by red-hot Foden and Co

- BY LEE RYDER

DAN BURN'S sensational header put Newcastle on the way to victory over Athletic Club in a testing Champions League clash

Burn's bending header and another from Brazilian Joelinton gave the Magpies a vital win.

Toon boss Eddie Howe said: “Really pleased with today. I don’t think it was us at our best but we're in a good position now in this competition”

The eight-time Spanish champions arrived at St James’ Park with their heads down after a last-gasp defeat to Real Sociedad in the Basque derby at the weekend.

‘And they forced the first effort on target. A corner at the Gallowgate End was swung in by Alex Berenguer with Unai Gomez heading straight at Nick Pope. It jolted the Magpies into action and Malick Thiaw’s pass over the top found Joelinton to slam home - only to be ruled offside.

But Newcastle edged ahead on 11 minutes after winning a free-kick midway inside the Bilbao half. Kieran Trippier drifted the ball in and Burn steered home a swerving header.

Watching on, club legend Alan Shearer looked impressed.
