FOCUS on rowdy fans overshadowed our historic Ryder Cup triumph

- BY NEIL MCLEMAN

RORY MCILROY has claimed the fallout over US fan behaviour at the Ryder Cup has overshadowed Europe's “incredible performance” in winning back the trophy.

The Masters champion and his teammates were subjected to constant abuse as Luke Donald's team triumphed at Bethpage Black last month.

The MC on the first tee resigned after encouraging vulgar chanting - and the president of the PGA of America personally apologised to Mcllroy and his wife Erica after the dramatic 15-13 win.

The American had beer thrown on her during a hostile Saturday where police dogs were deployed on the course.

But speaking before his first tournament since the Ryder Cup at the DP World India Championship, world No.2 Rory said: “I have been following the sort of narrative coming out of the Ryder Cup just like everyone else.

“But unfortunately, it takes away from what an incredible performance it was by The European Team.

“Obviously as I'm playing my matches, T'm focused on trying to win my point.
