Mcllroy dubs money-spinning finale 'clean slate' as he goes in level with Scottie.. even if he didn't mind chase

- BY DALE RANKIN

RORY MCILROY says the “clean slate” at East Lake means any one of the 30 golfers teeing up could walk off with the FedEx Cup and a £7.4million windfall.

But the world No.2 admits he was among a minority who weren't calling for the old format to be canned.

Masters winner McIlroy is second in the FedEx rankings behind defending champion Scottie Scheffler heading into the PGA Tour season finale.

But he will not start the Tour Championship tomorrow with a two-shot deficit after the unpopular starting strokes format was axed for this year.

Every player will start equal in Atlanta rather than the No.1 in the rankings teeing off on 10 under with the rest behind him on a sliding scale down to level.

That means the winner of the tournament come Sunday night will also be crowned FedEx champion.

McIlroy, who finished tied 12th at last weekend's BMW Championship, the second of three playoff events, said: "Any time you make it back to East Lake you've had a good year and it's always nice to come back.
