Review of cause of death system causing delays in funeral arrangements

GRIEVING families are facing “a lot of stress” due to delays in receiving death certificates for loved ones, it is claimed.

Review of cause of death system causing delays in funeral arrangements

This is apparently partly due to a new system of medical examiners independently reviewing the cause of deaths.

The waits - which are allegedly lasting between two and 15 days in North Wales - are also making it problematic if families wish to see their late relative in a proper setting, such as a chapel of rest.

The waits are also creating financial issues for families wishing to contact organisations such as banks, as a medical examiner has to confirm a cause of death before a death certificate can be issued.

Conwy Cllr Mike Priestley, of Llandudno Junction, say he has been contacted by a number of families.

He said: “These delays can be up to a month and this is causing a lot of stress to families, who are already going through the bereavement process.

“I have been told that some families can’t go and visit loved ones during the delays, especially in a proper setting - a chapel of rest, for example.

“This is really deeply upsetting them and causing undue strain.”

Jonathen Harty, who works for Lord Brown & Harty Funeral Directors in Llandudno, said the delays are due to a number of reasons.
