Record low figure helping fuel Wales housing crisis

LOWEST NUMBER OF NEW-HOME STARTS ON RECORD REVEALED
THE past year saw the lowest number of housing starts on record in Wales, according to the latest figures.
Between April 2024 and March 2025, just 3,798 new dwellings were started.
This is 26% fewer than in the previous year. It also marked the lowest number of new dwelling starts on record. Back in 2015/16 it was closer to 7,000 homes being started a year.
The lack of new homes is one factor driving the housing crisis in the country that has seen many priced out the market and an increase in homelessness.
Based on the Welsh Government's 2024 dwelling stock stimates, the number of new dwellings started in 2024-25 equates to approximately three new dwellings per 1,000 existing dwellings.
