MASON MOUNT has backed summer signings Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo to lift Manchester United to another level.

- By SAMUEL LUCKHURST

United invested £133.5million to sign Cunha from Wolves and Mbeumo from Brentford and sharpen an attack that has recorded a minus goal difference in the past two seasons.

Mount scored three goals in May after returning from a three-and-a-half-month layoff with a groin problem but United have since brought in Cunha and Mbeumo, two prospective playmakers.

"Any time you do get that opportunity to be on the pitch, you want to do something," Mount stressed.

"You want to affect the game. That's always the way I've looked at it.

"Any opportunity you get, you've got to try and take it. And I'll always back myself. I know what I can do.

"With the new signings coming in, they're going to elevate us to another level and we all need to really perform."

Head coach Ruben Amorim has repeatedly said he “loves” Mount, who is well versed at playing in a 3-4-2-1 formation, having lined up as one of the two playmakers in the 2021 Champions League and European Championship finals for Chelsea and England.

He said: “He [Amorim] has definitely given that confidence to me from the first day he came in, and I know what he wants.

“I feel like I know how he wants the team to play. And I've had some experience in that role as well.

“So that helps with the younger lads coming in and me helping them understand the positions of the formation and everything. It’s been brilliant and the manager has that confidence in me to go out there and perform - it definitely helps as a player.”
