I CAN'T remember a time when watching the news left me more unsure whether to laugh or to cry.

A Labour government finally does what the Brexiteers have been crying out for, striking a trade deal with one of the world’s biggest economies, and the Vote Leave fanatics wail about opening the door to thousands of Indians flooding here to take our jobs and not pay tax. Before realising they had misread the deal, but carrying on whinging about it anyway.

Then there’s the American deal which is being put down to the might of British “soft power.” Which translates to us getting down on all fours and offering its president a mini-break in a palace and the prospect of holding the British Open on one of his Scottish golf courses if he'll deign to cut some of his tariffs.
