More heartbreak for monkeys with sanctuary at risk

THE Monkey Sanctuary began life as a safe haven for woolly monkeys rescued from the booming exotic pet trade of the 1950s and 60s.

- NADA FARHOUD

What started as an act of compassion in 1964 grew into a pioneering movement for primate welfare and today's 10-acre site, Wild Futures, near Looe in Cornwall.

But now, after the upheaval of Covid and ongoing economic turmoil, it is at risk of closure - a sanctuary where 31 victims of the UK's cruel primate pet trade have found safety, dignity and love.

Without urgent support, the sanctuary will come to an end, as will its influence on primate welfare across the world.
