Let the Papal decide

Conclave for 267th pontiff begins. Incredible history of top-secret election
The election of a pope is the most secretive democratic process in the world, embodied so vividly in the Latin for conclave - "cum clave", or "with key".
Steeped in mystery, suspense and intrigue, it is no wonder the selection inspired an Oscar-winning Hollywood film that captured the politics, ethics and global ramifications of the choice.
Whoever is picked will become one of the world's most powerful figures, considered to be the successor of St Peter, the first apostle, and leader of 1.4 billion Catholics. As the conclave starts at the Vatican today, the Mirror delves into the history of this clandestine process, and what the world can expect to happen.
Since the death of Pope Francis, 88, on April 21, cardinals - the "princes of the church" - have headed to Rome. By Monday, the 133 cardinals under 80 who are eligible to vote had arrived, signalling the conclave could begin.
Today, they will make their way from their lodgings in Casa Santa Marta to the Sistine Chapel. Both places have been swept for electronic bugs, jamming devices have been installed and windows have been coated to stop laser microphones picking up voices.
Their bedrooms have been drawn by lot, windows have been blacked out and even the menu is restricted - foods in which messages could be concealed, such as pies or chicken, are banned.
The clerics must hand in phones, avoid newspapers, television, radio and the internet, and swear an oath of secrecy, along with all staff.
Anyone who leaks conclave details will be excommunicated for ever.
