EIGHTY years on from when the first nuclear bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, the world leaders are ramping up their nuclear arsenals. When will they ever learn?

We have a dictator in Russia who is only interested in making war on Ukraine, then we have a crackpot in North Korea and another despot in China. They are all intent on obliterating each other.

But this sort of thing is happening all over the world. Countries are all moving to the extreme right of politics. Have we not learned the lessons of history? If not Armageddon is rapidly approaching.

Keith Bowman Chesterfield, Derbyshire

It is now 80 years since the two atomic bombings of Japan and we should remember the consequences. On a recent trip through the Hiroshima Peace Park and Museum it was so easy to see how horrible it was. It is an event that should never happen again and yet Putin has mentioned the possi bility. “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it,” as the saying goes. And those who ignore it and make threats are evil.
