JOE ROOT played a blinder, but for England's fallen white-ball heroes it's the end of an error.

The tickertape, laps of honour and golden hue of that champagne super-over to win the 2019 World Cup seems like a mirage from a parallel universe now.

England have reverted to being the fall-guys of limited-overs cricket.

A ninth defeat in 10 limited-overs matches since Test guru Brendon McCullum expanded his head coaching role leaves Jos Buttler's position as captain virtually untenable.

"Obviously the results aren't where they need to be," admitted Buttler. "I've got to work out personally, am I part of the problem or am I part of the solution?"

And for McCullum, architect of so many exhilarating white-knuckle rides in red-ball cricket, the cult of Bazball now faces its most forensic examination.
