MESSAGE FROM H.E. MIYON LEE, AMBASSADOR OF THE REPUBLIC OF KOREA, ON THE OCCASION OF KOREA'S NATIONAL FOUNDATION DAY 2025
Daily Mirror - Sri Lanka
|October 03, 2025
As the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Sri Lanka, I am honored to celebrate Korea's 4358th National Foundation Day -(개천절), Gaecheonjeol) on October 3 with the people of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka.

This year's commemoration carries special significance, as it also marks the 80th anniversary of Korea's Liberation in 1945 after the World War II. These dual milestones highlight both the depth of Korea's ancient history and the modern journey of the Republic, reminding us of the sacrifices made by our forefathers to gain freedom and promote democracy.
Korea's modern journey has been shaped by challenges, but also by determination at every crucial moment. In December last year, the Korean people fought back the declaration of emergency martial law and reaffirmed the strength of civic responsibility. The peaceful presidential election in June 2025 and the inauguration of Lee Jae Myung Administration has demonstrated the resilience and maturity of Korea's democratic system. The new administration has announced 123 national policy tasks, which include strengthening democratic governance, advancing inclusive development, and working toward the peaceful resolution of relations with North Korea through dialogue and cooperation.
Korea draws similarities with Sri Lanka, which experienced “Aragalaya” in 2022 and one of the most peaceful and democratic transition of power in the nation's history. As a democratic partner, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Sri Lanka for its trust and support rendered to Korean people when our democracy was under threat. These shared experiences and mutual understanding make our friendship even more special.
This year marks the 48th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and Sri Lanka. Over nearly half a century, our two nations have cultivated a partnership built on deep and lasting connections.
