Time to stop playing politics with Easter Day terror attacks investigation

WHILE Sri Lankans were remembering the victims of the Easter Sunday terrorist attack victims yesterday there came in the sad news that Pope Francis, the head of the Roman Catholic Church, has died at the age of 88.

No doubt many Christians and particularly Catholics were deeply saddened to hear of his passing on a day that is poignant for them since the dastardly terror attacks took place on Easter Sunday in 2019. For the survivors of the tragedy, the day brings back memories of their loved ones taken in the cruellest manner while for those maimed in the attacks, it is a lifelong struggle for survival.

Archbishop of Colombo, His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith who led the prayers to mark the day called for setting up an independent prosecutor's office to oversee future investigations.

The Cardinal has done what he feels is right by the Catholic people he represents and despite criticism of some of his political affiliations, he's been consistent in calling for justice for the victims and their families.
