Today, we proudly celebrate France's national holiday, Bastille Day.

MESSAGE FROM THE AMBASSADOR OF FRANCE TO SRI LANKA

This day commemorates the liberation of the prisoners of the Bastille castle by the people of Paris on July 14, 1789. It symbolizes the values behind the motto of the French Republic and nation: Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité. Every year, we celebrate these values around the world, which not only form the foundation of our national life as citizens, but also inspire France's commitment to the international community.

These values were expressed in the French Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen of 1789, adopted during the French Revolution. They also inspired the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights, also adopted in Paris, in front of the Eiffel Tower. They underpin our commitment to the principles of multilateralism and the United Nations Charter, which France, aware of its responsibilities within the United Nations Security Council, and within United Nations organizations, continues to defend tirelessly.
