Ex-President Ranil invites Gen Z to join ‘SMART UNP’
Daily FT
|February 07, 2026
UNITED National Party (UNP) Leader and former President Ranil Wickremesinghe invited Generation Z (Gen Z) Sri Lankans to join the party, saying it has set a new vibe in politics to suit the present digital society.
-
“The former Prime Minister D.S. Senanayake prepared the country for the baby boomers and former President J.R. Jayewardene addressed the Millennials, but now it is the Gen Z era, which belongs to the digital society,” he said, launching the SMART UNP digital drive at the party headquarters, Sirikotha.
He said the objective of this initiative is to transform the party into a digital political party and to attract the younger generation to engage with the UNP, preparing them to be future leaders who can adapt to emerging technological and global challenges.
