Windrush scandal payouts hit £63m

COMPENSATION to victims of the Windrush scandal has hit almost £63million amid calls to take the scheme out of Home Office control due to a lack of faith in the system.

Government figures for May published a day before the 75th anniversary of the ship's arrival at Tilbury docks show hundreds of people in the system waiting at least a year for their claims to be decided.

The scheme, which has faced criticism for being inefficient, was set up in the wake of the scandal which saw people with a right to live in the UK - lose access to work and face wrongful detention or deportation.
