She finally opened up on her tax affairs in a television interview after a court order was lifted.

Ms Rayner, at times tearful, told Sky News that reports she had not paid enough tax on her second home were “accurate” and that she had discussed quitting with her family. The Deputy PM said: “I’ve been in shock. I relied on the advice I received. I’m devastated.”

She added that the court order being lifted was “not fair” on her relatives, saying: “It’s been a distressing time for my family.
