THE pay rise for teachers in England must be fully funded by the Government to prevent cuts to staffing and pupil support, unions have insisted.

Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson was warned that investment in improving pay and conditions is vital to tackling the teacher recruitment and retention crisis.

In May, the Government accepted recommendations to boost salaries of teachers and school leaders by 4% from September.

Ms Phillipson said schools would receive £615million more funding this financial year to help cover costs of increased pay awards.
