'Sustainable ceasefire key to a lasting peace'

Pressure grows on Israel as Cameron and Germany call for truce

DAVID Cameron has called for a "sustainable ceasefire" between Israel and Hamas in a significant shift in tone for Government policy.

The Foreign Secretary warned "too many civilians have been killed" in Jerusalem's military campaign.

But, in a joint article with German Foreign minister Annalena Baerbock, Lord Cameron stopped short of calling for an immediate ceasefire, which France is now urging.

The pair warned this would ignore "why Israel is forced to defend itself: Hamas barbarically attacked Israel and still fires rockets to kill Israeli citizens every day".

Yet Israel is coming under growing international pressure over the number of civilian deaths in Gaza.

US President Joe Biden warned that Benjamin Netanyahu's government could lose international support over "indiscriminate bombing" raids.

It comes as Israeli military uncovered what it claims is the largest Hamas tunnel found so far in Gaza.
