'Surrender' fears over Gibraltar border deal

LABOUR has been warned against a “surrender” of Gibraltar after the European Union gave its backing to a “fluid” border with Spain.

Foreign Secretary David Lammy yesterday hailed the deal as a “breakthrough” following talks in Gibraltar and Brussels.

Maros Sefcovic, the EU’s Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security, praised it as a “truly historic milestone, an EU-UK political agreement on the future relationship concerning Gibraltar”.

Under plans for a new agreement, checks will not be required on people crossing the border. But there will be dual border control checks for arrivals by air at Gibraltar’s airport, carried out by Gibraltar and Spanish officials.

Richard Tice, deputy leader of Reform UK, said: “Once again, this Labour Government has shown utter disregard for our overseas territories. This is another surrender.”
