WHEN Novak Djokovic fell painfully trying to convert a second match point against Flavio Cobolli, he lay on the Centre Court grass for a moment or two.

He was down... but not out. That is the story of the sunset years of the greatest career in men’s tennis.

It is just under two years since Djokovic, 38, won the last of his 24 Grand Slam events. His seventh Wimbledon title came in 2022. He was beaten in the final here by Carlos Alcaraz in 2023 and 2024, a straight-sets hammering 12 months ago seemingly signalling a changing of the guard.
