ONE in three people over the age of 50 do not tell others about their hearing loss, according to a study.

The international study found the problem is linked to stereotypes about ageing and disability, which can stop people seeking help.

The findings published in the International Journal of Audiology highlight the emotional and social toll of deafness.

It can lead to memory issues, low self-esteem, depression and loneliness, experts say.

Nearly 60% of people with auditory impairment said others had laughed at their difficulties, leaving them uncomfortable and frustrated.
