BEST known as mild-mannered car dealer Roy Evans in EastEnders, he played the role for nine years appearing in more than 600 episodes, before he died on screen of a major heart attack following a classic soap row.

Before arriving in Albert Square to run Deals on Wheels and to woo and wed Pat Butcher, played by Pam St Clement, Tony Caunter had been a dependable character actor on stage and screen for more than 30 years.

His role in EastEnders covered a number of important issues such as male impotence and the new drug at the time, Viagra, which caused him to suffer an angina attack.
