But anger also lingers after he suffered the pain and guilt of two Wembley defeats with Newcastle, the first in 1998 before being dropped for the final in 1999. Today his two old clubs meet.

"The worst possible draw for Newcastle," said Given before adding that the Toon must "channel the cup tradition of shock and the underdog".

"I'll have to go hunting upstairs to find the medal. They are only tiny.

"When you grow up you think they'll be bigger. It is not in pride of place.
