O'Brien dominates Cup but the race marred by fatal injury to staying stalwart Trueshan
SCANDINAVIA (4-1) won the battle of Ballydoyle as he ground out victory from favourite Illinois in the Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup.
However the feature race on a murky day for weather in West Sussex was marred by a fatal injury to popular stayer Trueshan.
The nine-year-old was taking part in a fourth edition when he was abruptly pulled up by jockey Hollie Doyle with six furlongs to go.
The incident overshadowed the tussle for supremacy between the Aidan O’Brien-trained pair, who had the £283,550 first prize in safekeeping with a furlong to run.
And Scandinavia showed superior staying power to thwart Illinois (7-4f) by three-quarters-of-a-length, despite being the lesser fancied of the two.
