BEFORE Brian Hayes, radio presenters tended to have very little interaction with their listeners.

But “the rudest man on radio” helped to transform phone-ins in the Seventies with a conversational and often confrontational style.
He believed callers were the stars of the show with something to say, however, he did not suffer fools gladly and would give them short shrift if they failed to make their point well and quickly. So much so he was satirised in Private Eye, who called him “Brian B*****d”.
