Loophole lets illegal migrants take work as delivery drivers

TAKEAWAY businesses such as Deliveroo, Just Eat and Uber Eats have been ordered to make checks to stop asylum seekers unlawfully delivering food for them.

It follows an Express investigation that revealed men in a migrant hotel were working as couriers for food delivery companies.

The Home Office wants such businesses to add a facial recognition feature to phone apps that are used to assign jobs to drivers.

They are similar to security features already in place in many online banking services.

Claims

It would ensure only the registered user could use the app, amid fears that people with the right to work in the UK are registering accounts with courier firms and then selling or renting access to asylum seekers.

Asylum seekers cannot work for at least a year when waiting for claims to be processed and even those given permits cannot work as couriers under Home Office rules.
