TOMMY FLEETWOOD wants the passing of his mother a year ago this week to be an inspiration as he seeks his "huge dream" of winning The Open.

The Southport-born Everton fan is certain to have massive home support at Hoylake.

But playing Royal Liverpool will be an extra emotional experience after he lost mum Sue to cancer at the age of 60 last July.

"It'll be different," said Fleetwood. "It'll be a year on Friday.

"It would be nice to think she is watching over - it will be a special event.

"I would love to play well and I would love to give myself a chance come Saturday and Sunday."

Speaking a year ago, Fleetwood revealed he had last seen Sue on the Tuesday after the 150th Open at St Andrews. "Who is ever ready for that?" he asked. "She was still young.
