It was crude up Pompeii!

No wonder they’ve picked a post-watershed time slot for POMPEII: LIFE IN THE CITY WITH DAN SNOW (5, 9pm).

Honestly, the language is appalling. Not throughout, I should say, but during a section filmed in one of Pompeii’s former brothels.

Dan’s co-presenter, fellow historian Dr Kate Lister, is giving us a guided tour of this somewhat grim facility (those stone beds look particularly uncomfortable, you wouldn’t get a wink of sleep), when she draws our attention to some graffiti scratched into the wall, dating back 2,000-odd years.

It’s in Latin, obviously, but an English translation helpfully pops up on screen.

And, yes, it turns out to be jolly offensive. One of this establishment's clients clearly wanted everyone to know what he'd been up to in there, and, well, let’s just say he’s chosen to express himself rather crudely.
