The Art of a Lie by Laura Shepherd-Robinson, hardback, £18.99

Four new books to read this week

Think of The Sting or The Talented Mr Ripley set in Georgian London with a colourful cast of strivers and scammers and you won't be far off this breathtaking historical thriller.

After the murder of her husband Jonas, Hannah Cole is struggling to keep her upmarket confectioners afloat. Author-turned-magistrate Henry Fielding thinks Jonas was corrupt and is blocking the inheritance Hannah needs.

Meanwhile the charming William Devereux has introduced Hannah to an Italian delicacy called ice cream. If she can recreate it, perhaps she can transform her fortunes. Brilliantly researched and masterfully told, this page-turner is every bit as delicious as Hannah's apricot tarts. 10/10

Don't Let Him In By Lisa Jewell, hardback, £20
