THE birth of an IVF calf has been hailed as "hugely significant" by vets working on a project to breed more environmentally friendly cows and they say the arrival may quicken the dairy industry's move to net zero.

Hilda is part of the Dumfriesbased Langhill Herd which has provided data for dairy farmers for more than half a century.

The calf, the herd's first using in vitro fertilisation, is part of the Cool Cows project which aims to breed cattle that produce less of the greenhouse gas methane.
