EXETER director of rugby Rob Baxter fears the proposed World Club Cup could derail the finances of Premiership outfits.
A provisional agreement on the new tournament, slated to start in 2028, has been signed by northern and southern hemisphere chiefs, it was revealed this week.
The top eight sides in the Champions Cup plus six from Super Rugby Down Under and two guest teams, most likely from Japan, would compete in the knockout competition.
But Baxter has warned there must be rock-solid investment in the tournament or more clubs could go to the wall.
He said: “As much as we might all want to do it you do have to be able to afford it.
