SAUNTERING into the television room the other day, I was astonished to see the Beachcomber Towers polar bear watching the BBC News channel. “I didn’t know you were interested in the news,” I said. “I thought you only watched snooker.”

“One tries to keep up,” he said, heaving a sigh of frustration, “but it’s very confusing. We see a lady talking at the Labour Party Conference, but the writing underneath is about Trump having a new peace plan for Gaza. Isn't Trump a snooker player?”

“Judd Trump is a very fine snooker player but I think they're referring to Donald Trump the American president,” I replied.
