ROBIN WRIGHT AND OLIVIA COOKE DISCUSS DUAL PERSPECTIVES AND JEALOUSY WITH LYNN RUSK IN THEIR UPCOMING THRILLER SERIES THE GIRLFRIEND

“THESE two women believe their truths are the only truths,” reflects Robin Wright of the characters at the heart of The Girlfriend.

The 59-year-old actress, known for playing Jenny in Forrest Gump and the scheming Claire Underwood in House of Cards, alongside House Of The Dragon's Olivia Cooke in the six-part psychological thriller adapted from Michelle Frances’s novel.

The series follows Laura, played by Robin, a woman who seems to have it all: a successful career, a devoted husband, portrayed by Waleed Zuaiter, and her beloved son, Daniel, played by Laurie Davidson.

But her perfect world unravels when Daniel introduces Cherry, played by Olivia, a girlfriend who changes everything.

After a fraught first meeting, Laura becomes convinced Cherry is hiding something. Is Cherry a calculating social climber, or is Laura simply paranoid? The truth depends on who you believe.

While dual perspectives and clashing narratives aren’t new to television, Showtime's The Affair being one of the best-known examples, The Girlfriend offers its own unsettling twist.

“What enticed me was the dual perspectives, especially the female characters, as women are so hyperaware,” says Robin, who also directed and produced the series.

“Men are like, ‘I didn’t even see what you just saw,’ and you saw 16 things that went down with one person's look. That's what the show is about. Did it really happen that way? Is that really how you heard it? Did she really say it in that tone? Or are you projecting onto that person?”
