Investment helps to cut spills from treatment works

SEWAGE overflows due to heavy rain have been dramatically reduced at a treatment site in North Cornwall, says South West Water.

The company said its North Petherwin wastewater treatment works, near Launceston, previously had one of the worst records for sewage spills in the county, with 183 releases in 2023.
Installation of a storage tank saw this number fall by 55% in 2024.
In that year almost 2,500 pollution incidents were recorded by water companies across the whole of England, according to environmental charity Surfers Against Sewage, a figure 30% higher than 2023's.
