Initiative to improve hearing services access aims to lift isolation

A NEW initiative is tuning up support for thousands of older people in Somerset living with hearing loss, as the NHS joins forces with a national deafness charity to improve access to services in care homes.

Somerset NHS Foundation Trust has partnered with the Royal National Institute for Deaf People (RNID) to launch a hearing aid support programme reaching 200 care homes across the county. The service will offer basic hearing aid repairs, hearing checks, and information to residents, their families and care home staff. With over 80,000 people in Somerset experiencing moderate to profound hearing loss, the need for accessible support is growing. Hearing loss is the second most common disability in the UK, yet often goes unnoticed, particularly in older adults. Around 75% of the more than 4,000 people living in Somerset's care homes are affected.
