Sri Vasavi Kanyakaparameshwari is the epitome of love, sacrifice, compassion, and spiritual purity in women.
Based on the sacred text Sri Pada Sri Vallabha Charitramrutam, Vasavi is said to be the sister of Sri Pada Sri Vallabha. She was born to Kusuma Sreshti and Kusumamba in the Vengi kingdom, during the 10th-11th centuries CE. Kusuma Sreshti ruled the town of Vasala and was greatly respected by the people. As she was born in Vasala, she was named Vasavi, and being born under Kanya Rashi, she was called Kanyaka.
The Vaishya community that worships her are called 'Sreshtis' or 'Komatis'. They were known for their devotion to cows and the river Godavari (also called Gomati locally). This is how the name Gomati evolved into Komati. In 1905, the Gomati Vaishya Association renamed the community as Arya Vaishyas, meaning noble or honorable Vaishyas.
