May 21, 2025

At the cusp of the 20th century's end, India witnessed the rise of several transformative leaders, yet few matched the radiance and impact of Rajiv Gandhi.

Taking office as Prime Minister at the young age of 42, Rajiv Gandhi emerged as a beacon of youthful dynamism and reformist zeal. His leadership not only left a profound mark on Indian politics but also elevated India's standing in global affairs. Rajiv Gandhi envisioned a modern, self-reliant, and equitable India—a nation where basic needs were met, peace prevailed, and citizens lived free from the shackles of poverty, corruption, and discrimination. His idea of India was one of harmony, equality, and dignity-reflecting Mahatma Gandhi's dream of Ram Rajya. His untimely and tragic assassination cut short a life of service, plunging the country into a political vacuum. Yet, his legacy remains deeply embedded in the fabric of contemporary India.

Transforming Education: Democracy’s Cornerstone

Rajiv Gandhi strongly believed that education was the bedrock of democracy. He argued that without proper education, democratic norms could neither be understood nor upheld. For democracy to flourish, he insisted, citizens must be educated enough to engage meaningfully in political processes. He advocated for an education system that nurtured political awareness, responsibility, and character—an ideal education that would produce socially conscious citizens proud of India's secular and cultural heritage. His efforts to reform the education policy were aimed particularly at empowering the underserved, including Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and backward classes.
