Capital Information
|April 10, 2025
Rowing in Hyderabad traces its roots back to 1982 thanks to the pioneering efforts of Mr. Rafeeq Ahmed. He is widely recognized as the architect of the sport in the region. A dedicated sportsman and serviceman, Mr. Ahmed was selected to represent the National Defence Academy (NDA) during Republic Day Parade in New Delhi, reflecting his commitment to both nation and sport.
-
At that time, Andhra Pradesh was still undivided and rowing had little to no infrastructure in place. Rising to the challenge, Mr. Ahmed initiated the manufacturing of rowing boats within Hyderabad itself, establishing a local boat-building unita visionary step given the complete absence of such facilities in the state.
The First Rowing Team:
The original rowing team from undivided Andhra Pradesh included: Aijaz Khan, Ali Arif, Asif Khan, Pervaiz Ahmed, Pervez Khursheed Hasan, Mohammed Istiyaq Khan, Mohammed Shamsuddin, Chandrasekhar Reddy, Durbey Kumar, Ashok Kumar Goud, Ravinder Singh, Wahajuddin Ahmed, Marahab Johnson, Ms.Safia, Ms. Rajni Totadri.
