Anna Univ sexual assault case : Life term awarded to accused

A Special Court on Monday sentenced 37-year-old Gnanasekaran, a DMK sympathizer, to rigorous life imprisonment with a minimum term of 30 years in the sensational state-owned Anna University sexual assault case.

After months of hearing arguments from both the sides, the court concluded the proceedings on May 23, 2025.
On May 28, the court found Gnanasekaran guilty of the crime while adjourning the sentence to today.
Awarding the quantum of punishment, the court handed a life sentence to Gnanasekaran, specifying that it should be no less than 30 years of rigorous imprisonment--a rare and stern punishment that underscores the gravity of the offense.
In addition, the court also imposed a fine of Rs 90,000 on the convict.
