As the 264th birth anniversary of Major-General Sir Thomas Munro approaches, historians and citizens alike reflect on the enduring legacy of one of British India's most influential colonial administrators.

Munro, born on May 27, 1761, in Glasgow, Scotland, served as a distinguished soldier and statesman under the British East India Company, leaving a transformative mark on the Madras Presidency during the early 19th century.

Born into a merchant family affected by the collapse of the tobacco trade during the American Revolutionary War, Munro's early promise as a scholar and athlete at the University of Glasgow soon gave way to military aspirations. In 1779, he sailed to India as an infantry cadet in the Madras Army. Munro quickly rose through the ranks, serving with distinction in the Second Anglo-Mysore War against Hyder Ali and later against Tipu Sultan. His military acumen and administrative skills came to the fore when he was selected to help manage territories captured from Tipu Sultan after the 1792 campaign.
